Encens Royale 1985 is, quite honestly, the most remarkable oud I’ve ever encountered. From the moment I opened the bottle, I was transported—not just to the deep forests of Sumatra but to a different time altogether, when oud was untamed, raw, and majestic.

The first whiff is pure nostalgia: the unmistakable scent of oud chips sizzling on glowing charcoal, their resinous vapours curling into the air. It’s not the subtle, quiet kind of oil you have to strain to appreciate. This is bold, full-bodied oud that announces itself with confidence. It’s the kind of fragrance that takes you back to the very moment you first discovered the magic of oud. For me, it’s the kind of scent that reminds you why you fell in love with oud in the first place.

Encens Royale 1985 shares its heritage with the legendary Oud Royale 1985, distilled from the same centennial Sumatran mother trees. But while it carries that familiar DNA, this oil has its own personality. It’s richer, with an intense incense core that feels layered and alive. There’s also a spiced warmth running through it that makes it feel even more robust and evocative. If Oud Royale is the king, Encens Royale is its slightly edgier, more charismatic sibling.

For someone like me, who values oud for its ability to transport and transform, Encens Royale 1985 is everything I could have hoped for—and more. With three decades of natural ageing, it’s reached a level of maturity and depth that’s impossible to replicate. It’s not just an oil; it’s a journey, a story distilled into liquid form.

I’ve smelled a lot of ouds over the years, but this one is truly in a league of its own. The intensity, the richness, the complexity—it’s oud distilled to its purest essence. Some might even call it the “oudiest oud” of the century, and I wouldn’t disagree.

Oud Royale 1985 is long gone, and it's absence only heightens the value of Encens Royale. To me, this isn’t just an oil—it’s a piece of history, an irreplaceable treasure that I’ll cherish as part of my collection.

If you’re fortunate enough to experience it, I’m certain you’ll understand. Encens Royale 1985 isn’t just another oud—it’s a reminder of what makes this art form so special. And for me, it’s a fragrance I’ll never forget.
